Behind this is a well known story in Chinese history. The founder of the Ming Dynasty fought a major battle on the site over 600 years ago, and planned to build a great tower there. To commemorate his victory and provide a place to admire the scenery of the great river (Yuejiang Tower means "view the river" in classical Chinese), he invited his leading scholars to write essays with plans for the tower, and even wrote one himself. While several of these essays later became literary classics, the tower itself was never built. as the emperor was distracted by other rebellions and intrigues.
